Technology and innovation: Minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
Dr Robinson Poffo, coordinator of the Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Program at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, has already operated on approximately 200 patients, using the minimally invasive method, who were diagnosed with cardiac valve disorders, arrhythmias and some congenital heart diseases, in addition to selected cases of coronary insufficiency that require bypass surgery.
In conventional surgery, the incision is as large as 25 centimeters and recovery takes at least 40 days. In video-assisted minimally invasive cardiac surgery, the incision is five times smaller and the patient can resume his/her routine activities within 10 days. The next step is to include robotics in this type of procedure, which will allow the surgeon to conduct the surgery using equipment such as the DaVinci robotic system, already available in São Paulo.
